The Faery Gate

Pagan Moon's answer to "Dear Abby". Here we welcome questions for advice that anyone may come upon on their spiritual quest. Lady True will answer, to the best of her ability, based on her training as a priestess for the past two years, education in psychology and at least seven years experience working in human services. The information is solely the opinion of Lady True and does not involve legal or medical advice. Welcome to my column. I want to thank those that submitted questions and hope that they will stimulate more questions for future issues.

Dear Lady True,

In recent years I have come to see the world, and the universe beyond, as a source of beauty in and of itself, but also a random thing, without rhyme or reason. Still, another part of me has always noticed what I take to be omens of good things in the future. I would like to believe that there is some pattern, some great design, but the skeptic in me always comes to the conclusion that things happen, affecting a future as yet unwritten. I find that unknown future kind of exciting, but a part of me wants to believe that things happen for a reason, even the deaths of close friends and relatives and other personal tragedies. I guess it's the old fate/free will conundrum. Perhaps this is not a question per se, or one that would take volumes to answer, but are we more than just actors in a totally ad libbed universe? Do things really happen for a reason?

Chris

Greetings Chris,

As you stated, this comes down to fate or free will. I submit to you that rather than looking at this as an "either or" situation one must realize that fate and free will are both connected.

In some respects I understand how you can see us as actors in a huge play, because of how our genetic make-up and our environment influences us. However, ultimately, I feel, we do have the power to overcome many things and thus get the most from life.

Some people believe their future is written and perhaps on some level it is. However, who wrote that future is up for debate. It could be one's Higher Power, another being altogether or even oneself. The point is that the future can be altered by the will of the person. How a person lives their life strengthens which future they are heading towards but that does not mean another future is not a possibility.

In answer to your second question, about things happening for a reason, I first must say that I do not believe in coincidences. Things that appear to be happening for a reason usually are. Again the question comes back to who is creating that action. Whose energy has made it come about? As I stated above, it could come from one's Higher Power, another being or oneself. Basically what I believe is that there is both fate and free will. How much of either, in any one person's life, depends greatly on their religious, spiritual and personal beliefs. For me, free will allows me to create my own fate.

To wrap this up (finally), I do not believe we are just actors playing out a pre-written script, however, I do believe that all things happen for a reason. Whose reason or agenda is usually that which eludes us. But more likely than not it is we who have created our past, present and future.

Dear Lady True,

If you were conducting an activity, and there were those around that did not believe . . . in your opinion, would their combined thoughts of disbelief cancel out any metaphysical activity that you were trying to achieve?

In that same train of thought: if you had a group of believers, and a group of non-believers (say, in magic), would the believers be able to achieve any of the results that they believed in, or would the cloud of disbelief be so strong as to banish any intent given towards such goals?

Bright be thy day in the sun,
Wintershard

Greetings Wintershard,

My opinion, in this situation, depends on whether or not the non-believer (s) are aware of the metaphysical (magical) activity. For the non-believer they simply do not believe. However, in my opinion, their non-belief creates something akin to a shield, subconsciously, which can counteract a magical working. The non-believer is not aware of this shield occurring because it is not something that they believe in. The non-believer never has to believe in magic to cancel the working out because the believer will hit the "shield" and unless they are strong enough or can work through the "shield", the working will fail.

If the non-believers are not aware of any possible magical workings it is not as likely that their non-belief will cancel an activity out. If they do not believe and they are not aware that others, who do believe, are doing a working, then they are not considering the option of anyone working anything on them, against them or around them. Essentially meaning their subconscious is not re-enforcing their non-belief hence making them more vulnerable to the strength of a believer's will. When someone becomes aware then the strength of their will (the strength of their non-belief in this particular situation) could be stronger then the will of the person or people performing the magical act and in essence block, shield or cancel out the action at least from the perspective of the believer. For the non-believer nothing ever happened. It is not so much about belief or non-belief in magic or the working but rather the strength of those beliefs (i.e. will).

In closing I would like to include a reading that speaks to me and reminds me to be open to all things and to listen always:

The Hitch-Hiker

His presence along the road brought me joy
Someone new, something new
Deeply, I listened-
The words came on and on.
Words with quite the sound
Words without a thread
There seems to be a wealth of knowledge,
The words keep coming on
Fantasy
Wisdom, not knowledge
Truth, not words.
I go.

Many Blessings,
Lady True
