Welcome to my column. This month I had some thoughts
that I wanted to put out there in hopes of gathering
other's opinions and also, perhaps, answer a question
that I find to be common.
Can one be a Christian
witch?
Was Jesus a witch? Can a Christian be a witch? I have
seen these questions come up quite a few times in discussions
and this has caused me to ponder at some length. I believe
that when a person refers to Jesus as a witch they do
so considering that it appears his miracles were an
act of magic. Of course that is not what most Christians
would call those acts.
The problem appears to be word usage. What is the
definition of the word "witch?" For me it means
one who practices magic (an ability or tool). You can
be a witch and be of any faith. Without the negative
connotations to the word "witch" you are essentially
left with an individual who practices magic, as a tool.
Additionally, if you are a "Witch" verses a "witch"
typically you are Pagan and it is part of your faith
as well as a tool.
If you can accept the definition of "witch" to mean
a practitioner of magic then it is possible to say that
Jesus was indeed a witch, by my definition of the word.
Most Christians would not accept this word usage due
to the fact that being a witch has always been considered
inherently evil. However, there is nothing evil in magic.
What becomes "evil" is the intention of the person who
is wielding the tool (i.e. magic).
You can be a Christian witch, however most Christians
do not accept the term "witch" because of their misunderstanding
of the translation. If one were Christian and following
God then most likely He wouldn't have a problem with
someone practicing magic as long as that person did
not worship another God or use magic with ill intent.
If fact, the commandment "You shall have no other God
before me" (Old Testament) does not, by any means, say
you cannot use magic. That is all it comes down to for
me. It becomes complex when people become too rigid
in their definitions of words without proper information.
Many Blessings,
Lady True
