Nineteen tracks and I love them all. I wasn't sure
what to expect, since I like faster music, and I thought
this would be too slow and staid for me, but that definitely
is not true. This CD has a lovely, ethereal sound to
it and has already been added to my wishlist.
Undrentide, by the Medieval Baebes does not have a
genre listing on it, probably because it contains several.
Only one song is actually in modern English. The rest
are in modern Italian, Middle English, and medieval
French, Spanish and German. The booklet included with
the CD has full translations, and the ladies' voices
are expressive enough to transcend a language barrier.
Many of the songs are old poems of romance, with new
age-style electronic instruments added to them. Hence
it combines classical medieval with new age and even
a bit of a rock beat occasionally.
The Medieval Baebes is made up of twelve women with
gorgeous voices. Instruments include recorders, violin,
dulcimer, guitar, bells, tambourine, hurdy gurdy, mandolin,
zither, and various drums. All of this makes for a truly
unique sound, a tapestry for the ears. This is a CD
you'll want to play again and again.
Reviewer's favorite music includes: Loreena McKennitt,
The Rogues, Enter The Haggis, Moonstruck, filk.
